Behavioural interview
A behavioural interview asks candidates to describe specific past situations — "tell me about a time when…" — on the principle that what someone has actually done predicts future behaviour better than what they say they would do hypothetically.
The quality of a behavioural interview lives almost entirely in the follow-ups. A candidate answering "tell me about a time you handled conflict" can produce a rehearsed story; the useful information comes from probing what specifically they said, what the other person did, and what they would change.
Frameworks such as STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) help interviewers keep answers concrete, though they are a scaffold rather than a script.
