Hiring bias
Hiring bias is any systematic influence on a hiring decision unrelated to a candidate's ability to do the job — including affinity bias, confirmation bias, the halo effect and anchoring. It is a property of normal human cognition, not of bad intentions.
Because bias is systematic rather than occasional, awareness training has repeatedly proven insufficient on its own. Structural interventions work better: structured questions, predefined criteria, independent scoring before discussion, and diverse panels.
Bias in AI-assisted hiring is a distinct and regulated concern. Systems trained on historical hiring data can reproduce historical patterns, which is a significant part of why employment AI is classified as high-risk under the EU AI Act.
