Levelling
Levelling is assigning a role or person to a defined seniority band, with expectations and compensation attached. Consistent levelling makes pay equitable and promotion legible; inconsistent levelling creates disputes that surface years later.
Levelling decisions made ad hoc during hiring — to close a candidate or fit a budget — are a common source of internal inequity that is expensive to correct.
