Shortlist
A shortlist is the small set of candidates taken forward to final stages — typically two to four. It exists to make comparison tractable; beyond about five, side-by-side assessment stops being meaningful.
A shortlist of one is not a shortlist, and removes any basis for comparison. A shortlist of eight usually means the earlier stages were not doing their job.
