Reference check

A reference check is a conversation with someone who has worked with the candidate, usually a former manager. Because candidates choose their referees, generic reference checks add little; targeted ones aimed at specific open questions add more.

The useful reference call is narrow: you have one or two genuine uncertainties from the interviews and you ask about those specifically.

Note that in some jurisdictions there are constraints on what former employers may disclose.
