Backend Developer job description template

A template you can use, plus the part most templates skip: how to assess each requirement once candidates start applying.

Backend developers build the services, APIs and data layers behind a product. The work is dominated by correctness, failure handling and the cost of changing decisions once data has accumulated behind them. A good backend developer job description separates genuine must-haves from preferences, describes what the person will actually do, and defines the criteria interviewers will assess against.

About the role

Backend developers build the services, APIs and data layers behind a product. The work is dominated by correctness, failure handling and the cost of changing decisions once data has accumulated behind them.

Also advertised as: Backend Engineer, Server-Side Developer, API Developer.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build APIs and services
  • Model data and manage schema changes safely
  • Handle failure modes, retries and idempotency
  • Monitor service health and respond to incidents
  • Keep systems secure and dependencies current

Requirements

Essential

  • Production experience with a server-side language and a real database
  • Understanding of API design and versioning
  • Awareness of common security failure modes
  • Experience operating something they built, not just shipping it

Nice to have

  • Your stack
  • Message queues or event-driven experience
  • Infrastructure-as-code familiarity

Keep the essential list genuinely essential. Long requirement lists measurably reduce applications from candidates who would meet your actual bar, with a stronger effect among under-represented groups. Everything you can train, move to nice-to-have.

How to assess each requirement

This is the part most job description templates omit, and it is the part that determines whether the description was worth writing. Each requirement needs a way to test it:

RequirementHow to assess it
Production experience with a server-side language and a real databaseAsk: "Describe an API you designed. What would you change about it now?"
Understanding of API design and versioningAsk: "How have you handled a schema change on a large table in production?"
Awareness of common security failure modesAsk: "A downstream service starts failing intermittently. How do you make your service resilient?"
Experience operating something they built, not just shipping itAsk: "How do you think about idempotency?"

On salary

Publish a range. Pay transparency requirements are expanding across the EU and parts of the US, candidates increasingly filter out roles without one, and omitting it mainly advantages whoever negotiates hardest — which correlates with confidence rather than contribution. See compensation bands.
