Product Manager job description template
A template you can use, plus the part most templates skip: how to assess each requirement once candidates start applying.
Product managers decide what gets built and why. The role has responsibility without direct authority, so it runs on evidence, judgement and the ability to say no clearly. A good product manager job description separates genuine must-haves from preferences, describes what the person will actually do, and defines the criteria interviewers will assess against.
About the role
Product managers decide what gets built and why. The role has responsibility without direct authority, so it runs on evidence, judgement and the ability to say no clearly.
Also advertised as: PM, Product Owner.
Responsibilities
- Define product strategy and roadmap for an area
- Talk to users and turn what they say into decisions
- Prioritise ruthlessly and communicate the reasoning
- Work with engineering and design through delivery
- Define success measures and check whether they were met
Requirements
Essential
- Evidence of shipping products, not just managing backlogs
- Direct user research experience
- Comfort saying no and explaining why
- Numerate enough to reason about impact
Nice to have
- Domain experience
- Technical background
- B2B or B2C matching your context
Keep the essential list genuinely essential. Long requirement lists measurably reduce applications from candidates who would meet your actual bar, with a stronger effect among under-represented groups. Everything you can train, move to nice-to-have.
How to assess each requirement
This is the part most job description templates omit, and it is the part that determines whether the description was worth writing. Each requirement needs a way to test it:
| Requirement | How to assess it |
|---|---|
| Evidence of shipping products, not just managing backlogs | Ask: "Tell me about something you decided not to build." |
| Direct user research experience | Ask: "How do you know your last launch worked?" |
| Comfort saying no and explaining why | Ask: "Walk me through how you talk to users." |
| Numerate enough to reason about impact | Ask: "Engineering says your top priority will take three months. What do you do?" |

On salary
Publish a range. Pay transparency requirements are expanding across the EU and parts of the US, candidates increasingly filter out roles without one, and omitting it mainly advantages whoever negotiates hardest — which correlates with confidence rather than contribution. See compensation bands.
