Account Executive job description template
A template you can use, plus the part most templates skip: how to assess each requirement once candidates start applying.
Account executives own deals from qualification to close. The role is judged on quota, but the underlying skill is qualification — knowing early which deals are real. A good account executive job description separates genuine must-haves from preferences, describes what the person will actually do, and defines the criteria interviewers will assess against.
About the role
Account executives own deals from qualification to close. The role is judged on quota, but the underlying skill is qualification — knowing early which deals are real.
Also advertised as: AE, Sales Executive, Enterprise AE.
Responsibilities
- Run discovery and qualify opportunities rigorously
- Manage deals through a defined sales process
- Build multi-threaded relationships within accounts
- Negotiate and close
- Forecast accurately
Requirements
Essential
- Consistent quota attainment with verifiable context
- Strong discovery skill
- Disciplined qualification
- Accurate forecasting
Nice to have
- Your deal size and cycle
- Your market
- Your sales methodology
Keep the essential list genuinely essential. Long requirement lists measurably reduce applications from candidates who would meet your actual bar, with a stronger effect among under-represented groups. Everything you can train, move to nice-to-have.
How to assess each requirement
This is the part most job description templates omit, and it is the part that determines whether the description was worth writing. Each requirement needs a way to test it:
| Requirement | How to assess it |
|---|---|
| Consistent quota attainment with verifiable context | Ask: "What was your quota and what did you actually attain, for each of the last two years?" |
| Strong discovery skill | Ask: "Talk me through your last big deal from first contact to signature." |
| Disciplined qualification | Ask: "How do you qualify out?" |
| Accurate forecasting | Ask: "Tell me about a deal you lost that you thought you would win." |

On salary
Publish a range. Pay transparency requirements are expanding across the EU and parts of the US, candidates increasingly filter out roles without one, and omitting it mainly advantages whoever negotiates hardest — which correlates with confidence rather than contribution. See compensation bands.
